William Downey has practiced, studied and taught visual art on three continents from the foothills of the Himalayas to the Atlantic shores of Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
His employment adventures have included painting backdrops and scenery as a scenic artist, decorating windows and sandwich boards as a sign painter, sculpting vehicle components for prototypes as an industrial designer, creating logos and fonts the old fashioned way as a graphic artist, painting and drawing pictures as a children’s book illustrator, painting portraits, and teaching classes, as well as leading demonstrations and hosting visiting artists as the artist-in-residence for the city of Kitchener. In fact, William has probably forgotten more visual art odd-jobbing than he can remember, but he has always been first and foremost a studio artist creating his own work according to his own vision.
After an 18 year hiatus from academia, William returned
to university to complete an MFA at the university of
Calgary. He is currently working from his studio in
Liverpool, Nova Scotia, where he lives with his wife
Krasimira and his daughter Rosa and Mihaella. Besides
painting and drawing, he loves hiking, climbing, carpentry,
visiting the ocean, practicing and teaching meditation,
and skating rather poorly.
